moji.design/typefoundry
“moji.design” is a type foundry dedicated to designing typefaces for Japanese and other East Asian scripts. We aim to move beyond treating letters merely as tools of communication, seeking instead to create experiences that engage the senses and imagination. Our work is guided by the pursuit of new possibilities in writing systems and the vision of a world where letters can be interpreted with greater freedom.
The Type Collection

At the heart of our practice lies a simple curiosity: “What kind of letters will people be reading and writing a hundred years from now?” This question fuels our daily experiments and drives the evolution of our type design.
Our design philosophy is founded on what we call “controllable fluctuation.” We intentionally integrate subtle irregularities, ambiguity, spacing, and interpretive openness into our work—uncertain elements that, when designed deliberately, generate richness, harmony, and expressive depth.
“Controllable fluctuation” is articulated through four perspectives:
Beauty in Imperfection
Imperfection represents a space for creation—a realm of possibilities not yet fixed. The aesthetic of finding beauty and value in imperfection reflects philosophical traditions shared across East Asia, and has been especially cultivated in Japanese culture. It nurtures imagination, openness, and the ability to embrace new interpretations.
Ambiguity as Harmony
Ambiguity is the state of resisting the reduction of imperfection to a single, fixed meaning. It has the power to embrace differences of culture and era, fostering a gentle sense of unity. By preserving interpretive breadth, ambiguity avoids locking forms into one “correct” reading, instead opening space for multiple truths to coexist.
Open Structure
Ma (間) refers to the relational space created through the intentional placement of multiple elements. It is not simply emptiness, but a dynamic interplay of time and space shaped by boundaries. In this designed space, unspoken meaning and sensations dwell.Ma determines the rhythm and presence of letters, sometimes conveying richer meaning than the lines themselves.
Shared Ground
Shared ground is a clear set of rules designed with openness—principles that invite participation.By being reproducible and welcoming to free interpretation, it encourages diverse acts of creation. It creates an environment where anyone, regardless of expertise, can engage, and where differing perspectives intersect and flourish.
		- Imperfection opens the door to creation.
		- Ambiguity widens the scope of harmony.
		- Ma deepens structural relationships.
		- Shared ground brings order to diversity.

Together, these four dimensions form the basis of "controllable fluctuation" the core of our type design practice. By continually exploring the possibilities born of this fluctuation, we seek to shape new visions of what writing can become.
