Mashikaku is a modern typeface based on a square grid and composed solely of horizontal and vertical lines. Drawing inspiration from the Kakuji script of the Edo period, it retains the geometric essence of its predecessor while adapting to contemporary spaces with a clean and approachable aesthetic.
Kakuji is a decorative typeface from the Edo period that uses straight lines to represent kanji. It was primarily used for symbols such as family crests and markings on artisans' work coats (shirushi hanten). Ukiyo-e prints from that period depict scenes in which Kakuji is naturally integrated into daily life.
Mashikaku preserves the essential elements needed to recognize each kanji, simplifying or merging other parts to create a distinct yet minimalist appearance. Subtle spacing adjustments in denser areas enhance readability and create a light, airy impression.
This typeface reinterprets the Edo-era concept of incorporating characters into everyday life as a form of expression, adapting it to suit modern aesthetics. Mashikaku blends seamlessly into signage, decorative designs, and product applications. It highlights the inherent beauty of kanji while harmonizing with contemporary spaces.
